Of Tattoos, Snow, and Concerts

Britt and I had a big day on Tuesday. She's off for Spring Break, so I decided to take the day off so we could spend some time together. We first went and got a tattoo. Just something we do on random Tuesdays. We had BIGGER plans for that night: JOHN MAYER concert. Britt won the tickets through Alice 105.9 in November by calling into the station and telling a story to Slacker and Steve. Her story was sooooo amazing that they gave her the tickets. So, we've been planning this day for four months.

Britt had given me one job for the day: remind her to bring the tickets. About half way to my house, which is a 45 minute drive, she realized the tickets were still on her shelf at home, so after our tattoos, we drove back to Parker to get the tickets. We made a short detour to Park Meadows Mall (what's a girls day out without a little shopping) and then made a delicious, healthy dinner for the two of us and Shan and Case.

As we were making dinner, the rain turned into snow. Within an hour, there was several inches of snow on the ground. My aching foot from the tattoo needed some breathing room, so I figured I could venture out with some open flats on. WRONG! Luckily, I had a spare set of boots in my car, so I quickly changed into them (with a little moaning and groaning from the pain). From the time it took us to get out of car, buy tickets for the lightrail, and wait about five minutes for the train, we were SOAKED. We were both dripping and not in a very good mood.
You can see the snow falling in the background. Britt has pictures of me with my head full of snow, so I'll post those as soon as I get them. Upon arrival at the Pepsi Center, we soon forgot about being soaked and enjoyed a fabulous (FREE) concert. We sat by two really cool people, so we had a good time with them.
The opening band was Michael Franti and Spearhead. They were FANTASTIC! I liked it so much I want to buy his CD. Between sets, I received the call I had been waiting for all night. "This is Jefferson County School District. School has been cancelled for tomorrow." You have no idea how happy I was to hear that call (I had been debating about calling in a sub for the following day because I knew the concert was going to make for a late night. Mother nature took care of that for me). John Mayer was amazing. For as many dumb things that come out of his mouth, he is equally talented. He really did put on a fabulous show.

After the concert, we ventured out to almost a foot of snow on the ground. We had to wait for the lightrail, but we finally made it back into Littleton around 1am. Again, thank you God for the snow day the following day. Britt spent the night with me, as her little tiny car wouldn't have made it home that night. We slept in the next morning, made breakfast, made lunch, made brownies, watched The Blind Side, ate popcorn...You get the idea. I was thankful to spend part of her Spring Break with her! Love ya, Britt!

St. Paddy's Day

On St. Paddy's Day, I was able to meet up with my dear friends Courtney, Jen, Rob, Rich, Britt, all of whom I graduated with (except for Britt). We met in Castle Rock at Yolanda's for some great Mexican, and then we went across the street to partake in some green beer.

We had our first green beer last Saturday, so this is our second green beer on actual St. Paddy's Day.

Court has been my dear friend through ups and downs. She's my relationship counselor :)

My Job Situation :(

I wanted to update you on my job situation. It's kind of a crappy scenario at this point, but now that you know what's going on, you can pray for me and my job!

As a little background information, there are two English teachers (Laura and me) who are on a one year contract. We both have been well aware that we may or may not be renewed for next school year. Without going into too much detail, there is a HUGE budget crisis going on not only in Jefferson County, but over every single school district in CO. Laura's and my job has been on the chopping block for the entire school year and is contingent on 1). enrollment at Chatfield for next year, and 2). budget cut recommendations.

Good news: One of the recommendations has been to NOT alter the student/teacher ratio (42 teachers for every 1000 students).
Bad news: Chatfield's enrollment is down for next year by over 100 students.
Bad news: One teacher from each department must be cut.
Bad news: What Laura and I hold as two jobs will now be dwindled down to one job.
Bad news: IF there is not an in-district transfer (I'll explain that in a moment), either Laura or I will be out of a job next year.
Bad news: The in-district transfer...

What this means is if another school has to cut teachers, too, because of lower enrollment, and if those teachers that are cut are tenured (have been teaching for more than three years on a permanent contract), they are guaranteed a job somewhere in the District. If Dakota Ridge down the street has to cut an English tenured teacher due to low numbers, that teacher will automatically get the English position at Chatfield and both Laura and I are out of a job.

My principal said he will not know about in-district transfers until mid-April.

IF there are no transfers, then I have a shot at a job. Laura and I will have to interview for the one spot, along with anyone else who they decide to interview. However, from talking with my department chair, even though many people will be able to interview, the position really comes down to Laura and me.

Without sounding cocky, I am confident I can beat her in an interview. She has six years of teaching under her belt, but I have done more for this school than she has (coaching, teaching an all-boys English class, working games, etc). People do not like her, so that's also positive.

So that's where I stand. It first depends on if there's a transfer or not. If there's not, then I stand a good chance of keeping my job. I invite an interview against Laura. Let the better teacher win!

Update on the Update

In order to entertain you on my blog, I went out with Mr. Engineer last night. It wasn't just him and me, though. Britt and Mr. Teacher were also with us, so we all had a good time together. We started out at Sing Sings. Britt and I paid the cover to get in ($7 each), bought a drink, and right about the time we had the drink in our hand, Mr. Teacher and Mr. Engineer were ready to leave. Go figure!

We quickly drank our drink and left with them. We ended up at The Sports Column. Britt and I had never had green beer, so we had to document the special occasion. Your first look at Mr. Teacher

In the mean time, Mr. Teacher and Britt were enjoying their time together. Mr. Engineer asked me to step aside with him so he could talk to me. He goes: "I first want to tell you that you're smokin' hot. You are bad-ass. I understand that we're just the aftermath of Britt and Teacher being together, but I can tell that there's something between us. I feel it, and I'm interested to know how you feel about me."

Deer in the headlights by yours truly.

STUTTER

SILENCE

SHORT BREATHING

I quickly change the subject so I don't have to answer his question.

The four of us sat down, and before I knew it, Mr. Engineer had his hand on my knee.

OK

WHAT DO I DO?

Soon, my hand is in his hand. I excuse myself to go to the bathroom.

When I get back, Mr. Engineer asks me to follow him. I ask him what he wants, and he says he wants me to follow him so we can talk privately. I follow him, and as we sit down at an empty booth, he goes in for the kiss. I turned my head so his lips landed on my cheek.

He goes: "Well, I can tell you're not interested in kissing me. What's going on?"

I had no option but to tell the truth.

Here it goes. Notice the words in bold are NOT words guys want to hear come out of a girl's mouth: "Mr. Engineer, you're a really NICE guy. I enjoy spending time with you and Mr. Teacher. But I do not feel anything toward you other than FRIENDS. There are many reasons for this, and I want to continue spending time with you guys, but I need you to understand that I do NOT have feelings toward you and I am NOT INTERESTED in dating you."

THERE

IT'S OUT THERE!

I went on to explain a few of those reasons, and as I ended, he goes: "Wow. I respect you so much right now. I didn't know it was possible, but I like you even more than before." And in he went for ANOTHER kiss.

You gotta give this guy credit. He sure is persistent.

Hand on my knee again.

As the night ended, the guys needed a ride back home, so we all walked to the light rail together. Mr. Engineer went in for another kiss, to which he got my cheek. "This is awkward," he kept saying. I replied: "Then stop trying to kiss me!" Apart from the attempted kisses, we also snuck in a few pictures.

Your first look at Mr. Engineer

At the guys' house, we played Wii until 3:45 a.m. (silly time change). I stuck my ground with Mr. Engineer by reminding him every time he tried to kiss me that I wasn't interested. He stuck his ground by continuing to make a move. It was all in good humor, as Mr. Engineer is a really good guy. Britt and Mr. Teacher sat off the side and snickered as they watched us.

As we were leaving, Mr. Engineer said, "I'm going to call you and ask you out this week. I just wanted to warn you about that." I laughed.

Points for persistence!

Set Me Up

Karen from Chatfield is one of the coolest people I know. I will admit that I didn't like her much at first. She has a very abrasive personality, so if you don't take the time to get to know her, she can be a bit overwhelming. She speaks her mind, and she doesn't care who hears what she has to say. She's the union representative for Chatfield, so she's always quoting the law book.

Through the course of this year, however, I have come to really like Karen a lot. She's really funny, and since I'm not a confrontational person, her remarks don't bother me. Karen and I went to lunch a few weeks ago, and she made a comment about setting me up with someone.

I was interested in what she had to say, so I asked who she knew who might be willing to meet me. She told me it's her daughter's husband's brother, Robert.

His list:
Tall (check)
Big boned (check)
An engineer (check)
Makes a lot of money (check)
Cute (check)
Quiet (uh, not so much a check as something I could learn to live with)
32 (check)

She even went so far as to show me a picture of her daughter's husband because she said they look a lot alike. The brother was cute, so I figured that bode well for Robert.

After hearing her brag about Robert, I told her I was interested in meeting him. Why the heck not, huh? I told her to give him my email and/or phone number so he could contact me. I gave her my information to pass on to him. I was excited to meet Robert.

As we walked into the school I said, "I'm excited to meet this guy."

Karen replies, "Oh, well you won't be able to meet him for a while. He lives in California."

Uh....
PROBLEM!

"But he's really rich, so he can fly to Denver anytime he wants."

******************************

About a week later, I got a text from an unknown number. It said, "Hey Shilo, it's Megan (Karen's daughter). Here is Robert's email address. He knows you're going to email him."

I wanted to reply back, "MY NAME IS SPELLED SHILO(H)." But I didn't....

About five minutes later, my phone rang. It was Karen. She proceeded to tell me they had told Robert about me, and he was interested in chatting with me. She said I had to email him ASAP because he knew I was going to do it. I asked her why he wouldn't email me, and she said he was too shy to make the first move. REALLY? Who is sooooo shy that he can't email a girl? Especially at age 32?!?!

Anyway, I emailed Robert. I was friendly as I introduced myself and asked him a few questions.

I didn't hear back from him.

Karen asked me about it this week, and I told her he never emailed me back. She said, "Well, he's awfully shy. Maybe he's too shy to email you back. Maybe you should email him again."

Apart from the fact that he lives in California, this dude now has two strikes against him. If he's so shy he can't even email me back, then I'm out!

See ya, Robert!

God is Laughing at Me

***UPDATE***

Mr. Engineer texted ME last night and said, "Sorry I couldn't come to hang with you last night. What are you doing tonight?"

He totally thinks I sent that text.

He wanted to do something last night.

UGH

BRITT LAUGHING HYSTERICALLY

***END OF UPDATE***

I swear, sometimes God sits up in Heaven and laughs at me. And it's not because I told a funny joke (although ask me to share the Polar Bear joke sometime). It's not because I'm a crack up. It's not because I'm so witty.

It's because he sure does have a sense of humor. Take, for example, this situation:

The one guy I actually like disappears.

The one guy I have NO ATTRACTION to whatsoever is madly in love with me.

Go figure.

Ok, well maybe he's not madly in love with me, but I know he has a little crush on me.

I mean, what can I say? I am pretty fabulous and all...But enough about me.

Remember Mr. Teacher and Engineer? Remember this POST?

Mr. Teacher and Ms. Teacher (aka Britt) have been "getting to know each other." They have hung out a few times, they have texted back and forth, and they have talked on the phone several times. Last night, Britt was out with a bunch of her teacher friends, so she invited Mr. Teacher and me to come out with them. I was hoping Mr. Teacher wouldn't bring Mr. Engineer, and he did not, so I was off the hook with having to entertain the dude.

As the night went on, Mr. Teacher turns to me and says, "So...You have his number. You should call him and invite him out."

I go: "No, I actually don't have his number. You should just call him. He's your roommate and all."

(Oh, as a side note, I haven't mentioned yet that I got a call from a strange number this week. It was a 303 number, so the person was from Denver. I was at practice so I couldn't have answered it even if I wanted to, but I don't answer strange numbers. If they want to speak to me, they can leave me a message. This person didn't leave a message. Britt and I are pretty confident it was Mr. Engineer, but she wanted me to call/text it back and ask who it was. If I do that, I run the risk of having to talk to him... So, I still don't know who called me)

He goes: "No, no, no. You should call him. He'll come out if you call. If I call, he'll say he's going to bed."

I go: "That's OK. I'm fine with not calling him."

He goes: "Fine, I'll text him."

He proceeds to type a text. Being the curious person that I am, I ask to see the text before he sends it. It says: "Hi, this is Shilo. I would love it if you came out to grab a drink with us."

I go: "First of all, spell my name right. It has a H at the end. Second of all, please don't send that."

SEND

UGH

BOO

Mr. Engineer replied: "Thanks for the offer, but I have to work tomorrow so I'm going to stay in tonight. Have fun."

PHEW

It didn't end there, however. For the rest of the night, Mr. Teacher proceeded to tell me all the great qualities about Mr. Engineer and all the reasons why I should date him. Britt did not help with the situation, as she was helping out his cause.

I politely told Mr. Teacher I'm not interested, but the teasing lasted all night. I am ALL for being friends with these guys and hanging out, but I do not want Mr. Engineer to think that I like him. I also don't want Mr. Teacher reporting back that I hate Engineer's guts!

Anyway, Mr. Engineer likes me. I do not like him.

Go figure.

Laugh all you want, God.

Coach

I was walking through the hall the other day when I heard a girl say, "Hey, Coach. How are you?" I looked over my shoulder to see which Coach was behind me only to happily discover that she was talking to me. It was weird to be called Coach, but it was also exciting. Since then, I have seen several girls in the hallway, and it makes me smile when they yell out, "Hi, Coach!"

I began my official job last week. Tryouts were last week, so after it was all said and done, I had 14 girls on my team. The first thing they asked was what they should call me. I didn't know what to respond, so I told them they could call me whatever they felt comfortable calling me. "Ms. Nichols, Coach Nichols, or just Coach is fine by me." After one practice, I had several girls come up to me and tell me they already liked me better than their Coach last year. They said they were excited for the season.

I told the girls I would run with them. I don't know what I was thinking, but I figured I could run 10 minutes alongside some high school girls. I couldn't have been further from the truth. Before taking off, I warned them that I was not a runner and that I was out of shape. It was nice enough outside that they wanted to breathe in the fresh air, so we took off down the road with the timer set for 10 minutes. We made it about two minutes before I had to stop to walk. The girls were already half a block ahead of me. Thank goodness, as I rounded a corner, I saw a girl stopped. I jogged up to her (out of breath) to make sure she was OK. Her knee had popped out of place and she said she needed to walk the rest of the way. THANK YOU DEAR LORD! We walked the rest of the way together. The group waited for us up ahead, and the girls were really sweet. They asked me how I was doing, and my reply was, "CAN'T (cough) BREATHE (cough-wheeze-gasp)"

OK, well it wasn't that bad, but I told them I was super duper and that we'd all be in shape by the end of the season. I used the injured girl as my excuse for being so slow. At the end of the run they said, "We really appreciate you running with us. Most coaches just sit there and watch, so it's pretty cool you're running." They are super sweet girls.

We also decided as a team to give up sweets for the season. I told them I have reservations at The Melting Pot, and I was not going to give up fondue chocolate but otherwise I'm game to do it with them. It's going to be a long two months, but I'm excited to win our first game, which is this Saturday.
